Girl Talk – Trendy

February 16, 2010 · 11 comments

I used to do these Girl Talk posts way back when. They were dedicated to talking about stuff you might chat about with your girlfriends. It was a way to combat all the testosterone in my house. Girl Talk fell by the way side when I was pregnant with Wade, and too tired to keep up with it. I think it’s time to bring it back. So won’t you come by on Tuesdays, and join me for a little Girl Talk?

Let’s talk about fashion this week.

Trends come and go every season. But there are some I’m happier to see disappear than others.

Top on my list of fads I don’t miss? Words emblazoned across one’s backside.

A few years ago everyone from 40 year old soccer moms to 15 year old school girls sported the look. Wearing a billboard on your butt just screams mid-life crisis to me. And do you really want every weirdo out there trying to read the words on you innocent little girl’s behind?

I don’t miss people wearing pajama pants out in public either.

So what if it’s just the grocery store? Is it that hard to put on a pair of jeans? I’m gonna level with you. They may be comfy, but they’re not cute. Big and baggy with elastic waist or a draw string, they really just make everything look, well, big. The pajama pant has become the house dress of the 21st century. Let’s keep them in the house where they belong.

The trucker hat was a ridiculous craze too.

Here’s the thing. Where I hail from in Indiana they’re called  Seed Caps. They have logos on them like Pioneer, John Deere and Round-Up. They’re not new. Farmers wore them long before Ashton Kutcher was born. Seed Caps are made to keep the sun out of your eyes, and your head cool while driving a combine. Not for shopping at the mall.

In this sea of style disasters there are a few shining gems that I hope are here to stay.

The trouser jean is one of my favorite fashion break-throughs of all time.

Trouser jeans come in boot cut, straight leg, wide leg. There’s a style to flatter every shape. They always make you look pulled together, whether you’re schlepping around a shopping cart or going out for dinner. Since they’re still a jean, they’re comfy. No more excuses for wearing those pajama pants out.

I really hope the trapeze is now firmly ensconced as a classic shape.

The trapeze comes as a top or dress. With sleeves or without. Some are a bit loose fitting while others are very fluttery. Again your style of choice depends on the shape of your body. But they’re great for concealing the damage child bearing does to your upper half.

The tankini is a godsend.

I’m sure the tankini was invented by a beach-going mom who needed something flattering and comfortable to wear. It offers the coverage of a one-piece.  But since it is a two-piece, the bottom doesn’t ride up and “wedge” itself into places it’s not meant to go. Even better, make it into a skirtini and it hides a multitude of sins on your lower half too.

What trends were you glad to bid farewell? Anything currently in fashion that you wish would go the way of parachute pants? What’s in your closet that you hope becomes a style classic? Talk to me.

I NEVER wore pants with words across the bottom – so I guess I have never had a mid-life crisis – LOL. However, for when those soccer days come and you’re outside all day long, my guy needs a baseball cap for sun protection.

I adore the tankini anything that girly that hides those pregnancy ravages. I so enjoyed your girl-talk since that’s not happening at my house:)

I love girl talk. Any time of day – any day of the week. I’m up for a girl talk post! :)

Fashion – oh the woes! I think I’m currently porting a fashion – oh oh, and its going in the charity bin tonight. The smocked top (which is not doing anything for my saggy breasts. And it poofs out after them. So my large stomach now has a poofy poof on it. Seeeeexy. :)

I couldn’t stand the thong that showed from the back of a young girl’s way too low rise jeans! Seriously, we don’t need to see your thong.
I love my black stiletto boots. I hope they stay in style for a LONG time!!
I’m loving this girl talk!

Yes, love the black stiletto boots too! And so right about the thong. I would have been mortified when I was in high school if my underwear was showing. I’d be mortified now!

The trend I’m really frustrated with right now is jeans created to look distressed / torn / faded. Not like the “washes” of the 80s where they were all over and mainly the color.
I went into a rather decent store this weekend and couldn’t find many pairs at all of jeans that were dark blue, plain and had no “distress” marks. Very frustrating to me.

I love the tahnkini. I just recently got one. The other bonus is that I can cinch up the top without having it ride up, thus limit the possibility of “fallout”. O.o

Anyway. Good post. And yeah. Girl Talk is good.

Yeah, the cap helps with sun protection and
reduces the added burn caused by my water pill.

But what about those HME and BC Pilots hats? Not to mention Magna and Multi-Plex.
LaGrange County Dodge and Schlemmer’s and
Ace Hardware.

But otherwise, I just wear what I like and
ignore the fashion police and what is in style. Never had a Nehru jacket or a leisure
suit. And I don’t even like to go to the mailbox in sweats.

I absolutely love trouser jeans! I’m so glad the crop tops of the late 90s is out. So unflattering on almost everyone (unless you have a six-pack abs, which few people do). I love the long tunics these days

I hope the Ed Hardy trend will go away soon!

Ugh. Hate Ed Hardy too. I saw some new spring EH sandals in a store a few days ago. I don’t it’s going away just yet.

I have to much respect for my self to wear subjective words across my body/pants or where ever.

Following from Follow Friday and looking forward to your posts.

I may have to agree with Mandi above on this one – I don’t need to see anyone’s thong, so the low rise jeans maybe shouldn’t be so low rise!!!

Happy SITS Saturday Sharefest girl! Have a great weekend!
