Conversations with a Three-year-old: Everyone’s a Critic
On the couch one morning eating breakfast in our PJs…
“Mommie?”
“Yes?”
“You need to go put some make-up on so you look pretty again.”

Ouch! Like a kick in the stomach. A lot of time, the young one attribute putting on makeup to looking pretty.
I get told by my daughter to go and shave so I can look handsome again…but that is just mom putting her “up to it” to get me to shave on Saturday too.
Oh NO! And this from a BOY? It’s not too early – and I’m serious, because it came up early in our house with girls – but it’s truly not too early to talk to him about what makes people REALLY beautiful.
My 9yo is pretty wise, but my 7yo is much more worldly-influenced, so when she occasionally prances around asking us to tell us how beautiful she is, I reply with something like, “Yes – you were so kind to that boy in church and THAT makes you beautiful.” Or “Not really -you were being so bossy with your sister this morning, and that is NOT beautiful.”
It takes time and constant vigilance to counter society’s bombarding images of outward beauty, but I truly believe it is important that kids know that it is what is INSIDE and how you TREAT OTHERS that makes you beautiful or ugly.
Now that the 9yo is in 4th grade, she’s much more aware of people who look beautiful on the outside but are ugly on the inside and people who look, if not ugly, then at least unremarkable on the outside who are truly beautiful on the inside.
