College. It’s Expensive.

College.

I get nervous when I hear that word.

I have two boys who I want to attend college. In fact there really isn’t much choice. To have a successful career today you need a college degree. I can only imagine that it will be even more necessary in the future. We’ve already told David, our oldest, “You ARE going to college.”

The problem is I don’t know how we’re going to pay for it.

My husband and I have students loans of our own that maybe will finally be paid off when our oldest is ready to go to college. Although my husband is back in school now, so that debt is still growing.

Current estimates are that for my six-year-old to attend a public in-state institution, one of the cheaper higher education options, it will cost about $120,000 over four years. I don’t know about you, but to us that’s a small fortune. Since we have two boys that’s a grand total of $240,000.

Fortunately there are alternatives out there that are less expensive such as community colleges and online colleges.

I loved my college experience. I loved living on campus. I loved going to a close-knit, private school. I really want my boys to have that same experience. On the other hand a less costly option like online college could mean they can graduate without a lifetime of debt to pay off.

It’s a long time before my boys go to college, but with rising costs I don’t think it’s too early to start planning and considering all the options.

So far this is our plan: David is tall for his age. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for a basketball scholarship.

  1. Since my parents paid for Christian schooling K-12 we were on our own for college, and just took out student loans. We were fine. The nice thing about student loans is they are tax deductible :-)

Oh Colleen, reading your post had my stomach aching thinking about 3 at the same time.

Then, because hubby and I *only* have our Masters, we are ‘encouraging’ (saying like you “You ARE going to graduate school OR higher…” with less emphasis on the “or”); I totally hear you loud and clear.

But, then feeling somewhat guilty that hubby and I are demanding our goals on them (fortunately they all want to be doctors of their own reasons…and we’re praying that these child-dreams see stays with them) I laughed SO hard at your last line; especially since basketball is not in our genes…I thought, Oh; David has 1-up on my girls. ha HAH! LOL :-D

Should have held him out one more year.
