Blizzard
You know the song that goes, “snowin’ and blowin’ up bushels of fun”? Well, I don’t know about fun, but it is blowin’ and snowin’ bushels of snow, and it’s freezing!
It’s been near or below zero all day with wind chills in the minus 20’s. The wind is howling and blowing the foot of snow that was already on the ground all over. And lake effect snow has been coming down at our house all day too.
We were about two hours south this weekend in Indiana celebrating Christmas with my parents. It was just as cold there, but they didn’t have all the snow we do.
Things got worse the farther north we got as we drove home. Once we got near Kalamazoo so much snow was blowing across the freeway that we couldn’t see at times. And we came across a few drifts. The roads were icy too.
We got to our house only to discover that the driveway that had just been plowed Saturday morning was partially drifted shut.
I turned the TV on when we got inside and about five minutes later the NWS issued a blizzard warning for our area. So I guess we made it home before it got even worse.
I don’t have any photos of the snow for you, because I’m not going out there.
Friday we got close to a foot of snow in about five hours. Now this, and there’s more coming every day until Christmas.
We’ll definitely be having a white Christmas and a frozen Christmas. I have a little more shopping to do, and I’m wondering if I’ll even be able to get to the store.

Whatever your party affiliation, whatever candidate you choose, just get out there and vote Tuesday.
Don’t take your right to have your say as an American lightly.
Many other Americans fought and died so you could have that right. Many other people around the world only wish they had that right.
So go the polls and cast your ballot tomorrow. Maybe one voice won’t make a difference, but maybe one will.
You’ll never know if you don’t vote.

Last Wednesday before the morning sickness, poorly named since it lasts all day, arrived I took David out for a double whammy day of torture. He got a flu shot and a haircut.
Although he survived both pretty well.
A few weeks ago he went with me to the lab to get some blood drawn. While the technician was poking me with needles, David asked me if I was being brave because I wasn’t crying. So I told him to try and be brave like Mommie when they gave him the shot.
Brave nothing! This kid has nerves of steel. He didn’t flinch. Not even a little.
I couldn’t believe it. That was the first time we left the pediatrician’s office after a shot with out crying, and wringing of hands, and gnashing of teeth.
And that was just me.
David was always a basket case afterward too.
Then we went to get David’s haircut. Usually he tolerates that pretty well. But he has thrown a tantrum a time or two in the barber’s chair. I was afraid the the shot and the haircut in one day would be too much.
We go to a place called Snip It’s that only does kid’s hair. The chairs and capes are kid-sized, there’s a TV and toys at every station to distract them and the stylists are experts in cutting kid’s hair. That means they can cut straight, and not poke your child’s eye out even if he is flailing and screaming.
Fortunately on this day David was fine. He just sat patiently and let the stylist cut his hair. Much to my relief.
I was trying to grow David’s hair out into one of those cool shaggy High School Musical styles, but he didn’t like having it long. So we went back to short hair. Here’s a before.
This photo was taken when we out to dinner with Grandma and Grandpa a few weeks ago. Note the ice cream in one hand and the brownie in the other. NO, THEY DON’T SPOIL HIM!
Here’s the after photo.
O.K. So it’s still disheveled. David’s hair always seems to be out of place. And I’m not sure what’s with the Makali Culkin impression. By the way the sweater he’s wearing he picked out himself at The Children’s Place. I’m pretty sure I had one just like it back in the 80’s. Although I hated mine as I recall.
After the haircut I took David to the mall to make up for all the torture. He ate a huge piece of pizza, his favorite food, at the food court.
Then I let him run around in the indoor play area. A lot of malls around here have those. It’s a good way to entice mom to go shopping on cold, snowy days. It always amazes me that they have these places, because it seems to me that 50 kids under 48 inches tall running around in a small enclosed area, jumping and climbing, is a law suit waiting to happen. But as far as I know no one has been maimed — yet.
Then we shared some ice cream before heading home.
I barely had David strapped in the booster seat before he fell asleep. He snoozed all the way home.

Where have I been? Sick.
Just as I was starting to not feel so tired from being pregnant, I caught David’s cold. Then David’s cold turned into a double ear infection, and I was up with him for a night.
By Saturday I thought we were both feeling better. I actually ventured out of the house that night. In retrospect I should have stayed home, because I felt lousy again on Sunday and yesterday. Today I’m finally starting to feel “normal” again.
Well, normal for me anyway.
I might even make cookies tonight for the Cookie of the Week feature that I haven’t been keeping up with lately.
So, now it’s almost Hall-O-Ween.
David wanted to be a robot. I was going to make his costume. Then Sunday he saw a Fireman costume at the store, and the robot plans went out the window. Now he’s going to be , “a real fireman boy,” as he says.
We’re going to Trunk or Treat at our church Friday night. People in the church decorate their cars, dress up in costumes and hand out candy in the parking lot. There’s usually 150 cars or so, and they get pretty creative with the decorations. It beats going door to door to strangers’ houses, and makes quick work of filling up the candy bucket. Important since it’s always freezing cold, and sometimes even snows on Hall-O-Ween here. Then we always make a stop at Grandma’s house.
So what are your kid’s dressing up as? What are your Hall-O-Ween plans?
