Seasons

Ever had an ah-ha moment when you realized how blessed your really are?

I did today, and it was the result of something different I started doing.

In the mornings I have what I call my Not So Quiet Time, when I read my Bible and pray.

I call it Not So Quiet, because David is usually watching TV and Wade is playing. I’ve tried to do it at other times of the day when the boys are sleeping, but if I don’t do it in the morning, I don’t do it at all.

I’ve always written down prayer requests. A few weeks ago I also started writing down answers to those requests, and other things that I am thankful for.

Today I just kept writing, “Thank you for this, and thank you for that, and thank you, and thank you and thank you.” It went on and on. Then I wrote down the requests. And when I looked down at my notebook I realized the answers to prayer, and things I was thankful for far outweighed the number of requests.

It’s kind of human nature to sit and say to yourself, “I want blah, blah, blah…. I don’t have blah, blah, blah… I need blah, blah, blah.”

It’s not always human nature to focus on what we do have. But writing it down forced me to focus on it. There it was in black and white right in front of me, all the ways my family and I are blessed.

The glass wasn’t half-empty, it wasn’t even half-full. It was filled to the brim and over-flowing!

I felt such joy and such gratitude when I saw how very much I do have.

What was I moping about? What was I feeling so sorry for myself over?

Sure life isn’t perfect, but life is pretty good.

Why did I waste all that time worrying? Look how God answered all those requests! Surely he will answer more.

If you feel discouraged, I encourage you write down all the things you’re thankful for. You might be surprised just how long that list gets!

Well, one of the things I am thankful for is Spring!

We are having incredibly great April weather with way more than normal warm, sunny days.

Here’s a mish-mash of Spring photos.

David collecting Easter eggs at Grandma’s. He found a Woody Toy Story cowboy hat in his Easter basket.

Wade’s first Easter. He thought he was big stuff holding on to that egg. I love the mischievous expression on his face.

We went to the park over the weekend. See David’s weird hair? Earlier that day he asked me to style it like Astor Boy’s. David’s obsession with Astor Boy is a whole other post.

Wade’s first time in the baby swing at the park. He was still too little last year.

There’s an old railroad bridge that goes across the river at the park. It’s part of the city’s riverwalk. David feels brave and daring when he walks across it. But he still wants to hold Daddy’s hand.

Blossoms on the plum trees at our house came out over the weekend. They smell so sweet and good.

Buds on the Red Maple in the back yard.

So what are you doing to enjoy the spring?

It’s that time of year when I start thinking about planting flowers.

Here’s my problem. I love to smell the flowers, I love to enjoy their beauty. But I don’t enjoy so much the work of planting, and especially maintaining my flowerbeds. Ugh, all that weeding!

Container gardening is a great alternative to flowerbeds, and I find containers so much easier to maintain.

This year I’m thinking about planting some low maintenance greenery and rose bushes in the flowerbeds. Then to add some more color to the front of the house, I’d like to install Window Boxes for planting annuals.

FlowerWindowBoxes.com has all kinds of window box options to choose from. Their Window Box are made of no-rot PVC that can be painted, and looks like wood. They come in various styles and sizes to match the architecture of any home. They even have a handy little gadget called a Wickinator that will turn your box into a self-watering window box.

Once I get the window boxes installed, I’ll need to decided what to plant in them. I did some research, and discovered that some annuals do better than others in boxes.

Several sources recommended petunias. They are easy to grow, and I’ve had good luck in the past growing them in containers. The varieties of petunias that trail like Wave petunias would look really nice spilling over the edge of a window box.

Marigolds are hardy flowers that also do well in flower boxes. They need full sun, and can even tolerate drought pretty well. If you remove the dead flower heads marigolds will continue to re-bloom all summer, and can even seed and spread themselves.

My window boxes won’t be in the shade, but for shady areas impatients are recommended.

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance way to add flowers, and color to your home this summer consider installing window boxes.

The weather was crazy warm warm here this week. It was in the mid-80′s today and yesterday. That’s unheard of this time of year around here. I remember that the last few Easters we had snow on the ground still.

Welcome back global warming!

I seriously have no problem with Michigan’s climate suddenly becoming tropical.

Since it was such a  lovely day, we decided to enjoy the record high temperatures, and drove to Lake Michigan tonight for dinner and a walk along the beach.

It was windy, and the waves were splashing over the pier. I love to watch the lake when it’s choppy like that.

David was at Grandma’s house, but we took Wade with us. It was his first trip to the Big Lake.

I took this photo this evening of the pier at South Haven.

Isn’t it beautiful?

This is the kind of thing that makes enduring all those yucky Michigan winters worth it.

Summer’s End

Cricket’s chirp gets stronger

Heralding the season’s end.

Sing, sing your song!

Beckon back the warmer days.

Ask the summer

To stay a little longer.

flower

I was surprised to see this little viola blooming in the side yard flower bed. Here in West Michigan even our spring bulbs don’t really start to come up until at least the end of the month. It was still March when I took this photo the other day. After the long, freezing, snowy season we had this year I was as excited as the survivor of a nuclear winter to see this small sign of new life. It’s chilly and cloudy today, but this lone blossom is a promise of the warm days to come.

My son David almost ended up with Cadbury Cream Eggs for Valentine’s Day.

My husband Dave and I were shopping Friday afternoon, after our son left to go to my parent’s for the weekend, when I realized we forgot to get him something for Valentine’s Day. It was kind of a busy, hectic week and it just slipped my mind. (I know. Bad mommy! Bad mommy!) So we headed over to the seasonal aisle to pick up something to give David when he came home on Monday.

We arrived there to find just a few bags of Hershey’s Kisses. Where was everything? Surely they couldn’t have sold out of all the Valentine’s Day stuff?

Then I glanced farther down the aisle. There were stock boys filling empty shelves with chocolate Easter bunnies and egg coloring kits the day BEFORE Valentines’ Day.

The holiday wasn’t even over yet, and they’d already put away the lacy red hearts full of chocolates, and brought out the chick-shaped Peeps!

We weren’t the only people milling around looking dazed and confused, checking the date on our cell phones to make sure it was indeed still February 13th.

I thought it was insane when after trick-or-treating on Hall-O-Ween we went into a store to pick up some milk, and were greeted by a 20 foot fully decorated Christmas tree at the entrance. At least that holiday was in it’s waning hours before they moved on to the next.

I really didn’t know what to do for a moment as I stood pondering if David would think it strange to get a basket full of Robin’s Eggs for Valentine’s Day. Just how much would that confuse a four-year-old? Would it lead to years of therapy discussing issues about Conversation Hearts and Peter Cotton Tail?

We did find something for David at another store. But seriously. The hastiness of the retail sector to finish off one holiday so they can put their fingers in our wallets for the next is getting a little ridiculous.

I’m off now to go buy a chocolate bunny before they replace those with flags and plastic flowers for Memorial Day.

I’m pretty sure getting a wreath of fake red, white and blue carnations that says In Memoriam for Easter would lead to years of adolescent turmoil.

Winter Wonderland

December 1, 2008 · 4 comments

We had our first really good snow storm of the season. Several inches came down over yesterday and this morning. David couldn’t wait to get outside and play in it.

It’s the heavy, wet kind of snow that sticks to everything. Look how pretty the trees are all frosted in white.

This really puts me in the mood for Christmas!
