Jeanne says, “My little shop is my sanity outlet. I had been doing product design and graphic design and lots of other endeavors when baby #2 came along 16 months after baby #1. The precious minutes I had available for “me” were all taken up by work. I really needed to scale back and simplify my life. Being mom, of course, had to be my top priority. Then, I shed all these other things in order for my creative outlet to be my “real” art. I had been wanting so badly to get off the computer and “get my hands dirty” with paint. I had this pile of sketches sitting around forever and I was finally going to be able to turn them into paintings. I can’t tell you how excited I was. As an artist, it just feels like there’s something inside you that has to come out. Now I’m just thrilled to be able to spend my free moments on this passion of mine.”

Jeanne draws her inspiration from scripture. “The Bible is jam-packed with the most amazing blessings and promises from God. He loves and cares for us so much I just want to reflect that in my art. Also, I just love when people decorate with unique vintage finds - like retro signs. So… I combined the two!”

The most rewarding part of the business for Jeanne is receiving positive feedback. “When you pour your heart into a painting, and someone tells you they like/love it, too, that’s truly a sweet blessing,” she says.

Girls Just Wanna Win Swag: Rock Paper Silver

The winner of last week’s Buster and Boo giveaway is Janet.

This week’s featured company is Rock Paper Silver. Owner Catherine says she creates fun, affordable, classic jewelry for her shop. “I primarily work with Swarovski crystal cause nothing sparkles like a Swarovski crystal, semi-precious stones for their interesting colors and shapes, and intricate, vintage-esque charms which give my pieces a classic and timeless quality. In most of my pieces I use jewelry wire…free forming it around crystals and stones or creating hand beaded chains.”

Catherine says her inspiration simply comes from life. “I know this sounds kind of cliché but it is true. I never know when inspiration for a  new design will hit. I enjoy working and creating wearable uniqueness. When I sit down to create, I never know exactly what will turn up, but I do make sure what ever it is, it is wearable and fun.”

“I am a designer and creator at heart with a passion for jewelry. To me, wearing jewelry is like a shot of confidence.  It makes you feel stronger, more pulled together, beautiful, and special. I created Rock, Paper, Silver with this underlying mantra. The pieces in my collection are simple yet special. Some are even a little whimsical yet wearable. Each is created as a subtle statement piece, made to be noticed but in a non-obtrusive way.”

Catherine says being asked to make custom orders for weddings has been the most rewarding part of Rock Paper Silver so far. “I have done some orders both for brides and their bridesmaids, and love the fact that I made this very important day in their lives a little brighter and more beautiful. It is also very touching to be a part of Etsy, a community based entirely on valuing everything handmade. There are so many very talented artists, and I am very happy and honored to be swimming in the same pond!”

When Catherine is not making jewelry, you can find her riding her motorcycle, watching documentaries, reading historical fiction, cooking and baking, and snuggling with her husband. “I am a hopeless romantic at heart,” she says.

“One of my favorite sayings is ‘Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but rather by the moments that take our breath away.’ I try to live my life that way.”

Buster and Boo owner Sara admired the jewelry her sister-in-laws made for years, then after purchasing a  tutorial learned how to make her own.

Sara is inspired by many things. “Nature, my animals, the world around me! I love antiques too, so many of my pendants have that look…for example, I love to use vintage sheet music for my pendants.”

The rewarding part of the business for Sara is simply having a sale. “I don’t think I’ll ever tire of the thrill I feel when somebody appreciates what I’ve made - enough to buy it! Oftentimes though, I become attached to an item, and then it’s hard to part with it! I adore the scrabble pendants, each one a teeny tiny work of art.”

Sara has a second shop called Woolies, and family life keeps her busy as well. “I live on a little ranch in the high desert southwest with 10 animals, two teenage boys, and my husband. I work full time in addition to my “nighttime job” (Etsy). I love life.”
