Forget the 49ers and the Ravens. The biggest competition tonight was between advertisers to see which one could make us cry more.
What happened to there’s no crying in football? This year the Super Bowl should have been sponsored by Kleenex.
It didn’t help that they started things out with the Sandy Hook Elementary chorus singing America the beautiful. I almost started ugly crying right there. Thank goodness I had pizza and spinach artichoke dip to console me.
At halftime the emotional roller coaster really ramped up with Jeep’s ”Whole Again” nod to the men and women who serve in our military. Patriotism and Oprah are a potent combination.
Then as I was wiping away tears with shrimp cocktail the lights went out. For 35 minutes they sat in the dark in the Super Dome in New Orleans while America had PTSD flashbacks to Katrina. At least we didn’t have to wait for FEMA to show up this time.
It was time for dessert when Budweiser’s “The Clydesdales: Brotherhood” came on the screen. The upper lips of animal lovers everywhere began to quiver, and I chowed on brownies.
I think this is the first Super Bowl I ever emotionally ate my way through. I was down to some forgotten chocolate I found in the cupboard by the time Ram Trucks’ “Farmer” hit the air waves.
Love of country, animals and a tribute to our rich agricultural history, the Super Bowl was just as emotional as an episode of Downton Abbey. After last week’s Downton and tonight’s commercials, I’m a hot mess! Once I recover I’ll watch tonight’s Downton on the DVR.
So, which commercial made you cry most?

I’m going out and buying myself a Ram truck tomorrow AFTER I cancel my GoDaddy domain.
